The Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection has issued a strong reminder that both forcing and encouraging children to beg is unlawful under Fijian law. The ministry has emphasized the serious risks associated with child begging, stating that it exposes minors to potential exploitation, abuse, and harm, while also depriving them of a secure and nurturing environment.
Minister Sashi Kiran highlighted the legal obligations of parents and guardians to prioritize the safety and welfare of their children. “Encouraging or forcing children to beg violates their rights and contravenes national laws designed to protect them,” Ms. Kiran noted. She further warned that individuals facilitating such unlawful practices will face serious legal repercussions.
In collaboration with law enforcement, the ministry is committed to prosecuting offenders to ensure the wellbeing of children remains intact. The public is encouraged to report any occurrences of child begging by reaching out to authorities through the Child Helpline at 1325.
