Members of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) recently held a poignant moment of silence in memory of two former chiefs who passed away: the high chief of Rotuma and the Turaga Na Tui Yale of Kadavu. This heartfelt tribute was confirmed by GCC Chairperson Ratu Viliame Seruvakula during a media briefing at a morning tea break.
Additionally, the Attorney-General, Graham Leung, is anticipated to address GCC representatives regarding proposed village bylaws during this significant two-day meeting. This gathering brings together chiefs and representatives from all 14 provinces to deliberate on pressing issues faced by the i-Taukei community.
The agenda for today includes discussions on three vital topics: a review of the i-Taukei administration, a feasibility study examining the decentralisation of economic units, and updates related to legislation that adversely affects the i-Taukei population. The meeting is also graced by the presence of the President and the Turaga Bale Na Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.
This meeting is a crucial step towards fostering dialogue and addressing key issues within the i-Taukei community, providing a platform for chiefs to voice their concerns and work towards meaningful solutions for their people.
Overall, this gathering not only honors the legacy of the deceased chiefs but also reinforces the commitment of the GCC to unite and strengthen the i-Taukei community around common goals and challenges.
