Members of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) are advocating for a more active role in the presidential selection process, as expressed during a recent two-day meeting. Chairman Ratu Viliame Seruvakula announced that there is a strong desire within the council to review the Constitution, primarily focusing on the appointment of the head of state.

Ratu Viliame shared that a proposal was made to return the selection of the President to the GCC, and the majority of council members supported this idea. This proposal, alongside two review documents highlighting significant findings and recommendations, will be presented to the Government for consideration.

The discussion also touched upon the qualifications necessary for the presidential role, with Ratu Viliame emphasizing that it should be a priority for GCC to ensure candidates possess adequate education. This education is seen as vital since the President serves as the nation’s representative abroad and must understand legislative matters and the implications of signing bills.

Ratu Viliame further indicated that many of the proposals discussed during the meeting call for substantial constitutional changes. He expressed confidence that the committee’s recommendations regarding the iTaukei administration and the iTaukei Land and Fisheries Commission will prompt further government action.

With a strong collective will among the chiefs, Ratu Viliame is optimistic about the potential for meaningful changes. He reminded members that facing challenges in governance is part of the journey, but with determination, progress can be achieved.

In summary, the GCC is pushing for a more significant role in determining the President of Fiji, aiming for constitutional reform and broader representation in governance. This proactive stance reflects the council’s commitment to ensuring that the leadership is well-equipped to navigate the complexities of the role. The efforts of the GCC may lead to a more inclusive process in selecting national leaders, fostering a sense of unity and purpose within the community.
