Members of the Great Council of Chiefs are advocating for a role in the selection process of the President. During a recent two-day meeting chaired by Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, there was a considerable push for reviewing the Constitution, particularly regarding the appointment of the head of state.

The council predominantly supports the idea of returning the selection of the President to the Great Council of Chiefs. The suggestions and findings from this meeting will be formally presented to the government for further consideration.

When addressing the qualifications needed for potential candidates, Ratu Viliame emphasized the importance of education. He highlighted that the President represents the nation on an international stage and must comprehend the bills submitted to him, understanding the implications of those decisions.

Most of the proposals put forward during the gathering focused on significant constitutional changes. Ratu Viliame confirmed that the council will advocate for a thorough review of the iTaukei administration and the iTaukei Land and Fisheries Commission, in addition to their calls for constitutional amendments.

The council acknowledges the challenges ahead but remains optimistic about the possibility of change, reflecting a determined spirit within the chiefs. They believe that if there is a will, a way can be found to facilitate the necessary reforms.

This push for involvement in the Presidential selection illustrates the council’s commitment to ensuring that traditional leadership remains integral in the evolving political landscape of the nation. The engagement of the Great Council of Chiefs in this process could lead to more representative governance and a stronger connection between the government and the iTaukei community.
