Fiji’s newly inaugurated President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu delivered a compelling address urging the nation’s chiefs to embrace their responsibilities and lead by example. Speaking to a delegation from the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) at the State House, he emphasized the significance of self-reliance and active leadership in fostering strong communities.
Ratu Naiqama’s remarks came just before the two-day GCC meeting at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, where he highlighted that true strength in leadership requires chiefs to be self-sufficient. He stated, “For a chief to be strong and mighty, they need to be self-dependent,” stressing that the ability to provide for oneself is essential for gaining the respect and trust of their people.
He encouraged chiefs to take active roles in community initiatives, asserting that they should be the first to contribute in fundraising efforts, both through actions and resources. “You need to be leading. You need to be showing examples,” he insisted, clarifying that leadership requires proactive participation rather than relying on others.
Ratu Naiqama also criticized the “free-rider” mentality, urging those in leadership positions to engage in hard work and not depend on the efforts of others. He underscored that education is vital for effective leadership, advocating that chiefs must continually improve themselves to effectively guide their communities.
In essence, Ratu Naiqama’s call to action is a reminder of the important role that individual accountability plays in leadership, and it reinforces the need for unity and collaboration among chiefs in uplifting their communities.
This optimistic outlook on leadership could inspire a new wave of dedicated and proactive leaders in Fiji, one that fosters mutual respect, responsibility, and a commitment to community progress. It’s an encouraging development that can pave the way for constructive change in the nation.
