Chaudhry Challenges PM: Is Malimali’s Appointment a Conflict of Interest?

Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry has voiced strong opposition to Barbara Malimali’s appointment, urging Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to take action. Chaudhry criticized the Prime Minister for seemingly distancing himself from the decision by relying on the Judicial Service Commission’s recommendation for Malimali’s position in the Office of the President.

Chaudhry emphasized that Malimali’s appointment, while she is under investigation for alleged abuse of office, contradicts the rule of law and compromises good governance principles. He suggested that her appointment may be politically motivated to shield Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad from potential charges related to false declarations made to the Registrar of Political Parties.

Chaudhry pointed out that seven other Cabinet ministers have also been referred to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) for similar charges. This response followed the resignation of acting Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai and Malimali’s subsequent transition from the Electoral Commission to lead FICAC.

He expressed concerns that the manner in which Malimali’s FICAC role is being handled is alarming the nation, disturbing the business community, and diminishing investor confidence. He argued that the Prime Minister cannot remain passive as Malimali’s appointment raises significant national issues, asserting that it is his responsibility to act and restore trust in his administration.

Chaudhry further commented on Malimali’s statement regarding her intention to review the files of senior political figures, questioning the motivations behind her appointment. He called for transparency, stating that any attempts to hinder or obscure investigations would only escalate the already tense situation.
