Change, Freedom, and Controversy: Siromi Turaga’s Bold Statements on Fiji’s Future

Siromi Turaga, the Minister for Justice, commended his political party, The People’s Alliance, for its dedication to serving the community. Addressing the villagers of Nabuna in Cawa, Koro, Turaga emphasized that the party has spurred significant change.

Cawa district encompasses the villages of Cavaga, Tavua, Nabasovi, Kade, Nabuna, and Vatulele. Turaga remarked, “The People’s Alliance is a crucial party; despite its relative youth, it has delivered the change we envisioned.” He highlighted the concept of freedom, which he believes is granted by God and safeguarded under the 2013 Constitution.

Turaga expressed his gratitude for the unwavering support from the district of Cawa. “Thank you for your continued choice in electing me to protect Lomaiviti,” he stated. He also mentioned that the party would convene for its Annual General Meeting and that next month, the Minister for Agriculture is set to visit Koro, recognizing its fertile land.

He announced an upcoming agriculture show designed to support local farmers and encouraged residents to seize these opportunities. Turaga criticized the now-deregistered FijiFirst party for allegedly focusing on its own interests instead of serving the public.

“For 16 years, the iTaukei people were sidelined, and civil servants have recognized the significant changes they have long awaited. The Ministry of Justice staff, who once rarely ventured from their offices, are now actively visiting numerous provinces,” he said.

He assured that the government is prioritizing the needs of the people by bringing services directly to them. Turaga also addressed ongoing investigations of the previous administration, mentioning that 70 cases were referred to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) concerning alleged misuse of funds, with only one reaching the courts.

Additionally, Turaga and other ministers are reportedly under investigation by FICAC, following the resignation of former acting commissioner Francis Pulewai. Barbara Malimali has stepped into the role and confirmed a change in leadership, indicating that she will reassess prior actions taken by Pulewai.
