Pramod Chand, the President of the National Federation Party, has criticized former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry, accusing him of having a questionable reputation and lacking political morality. Chand’s comments came in response to remarks made by Chaudhry during the Fiji Labour Party’s Annual Delegates Conference held in Nadi.
Chand claims that Chaudhry’s accusations towards the current Coalition Government—labeling its leadership as self-serving and lacking integrity—are unfounded. He pointed out that Chaudhry has a troubled past, citing his conviction for financial impropriety and a hefty fine of $1 million for failing to declare significant overseas bank accounts. Chand emphasized that Chaudhry’s history of corruption and self-serving actions, particularly during his time in office, should not be overlooked.
He further accused Chaudhry of exploiting the situation of cane growers and their families while benefiting personally from constructing a refugee camp in Valelawa. Additionally, Chand criticized Chaudhry for misusing government funds for personal renovations and for his indifferent comments regarding the rising prices of essentials as Finance Minister after the 2006 coup.
Chand expressed confidence in the current Coalition Government’s efforts to rebuild democratic values, good governance, and accountability, which he asserts were dismantled during Chaudhry’s involvement in past administrations. He declared that attempts by Chaudhry to distract from his record are ineffective.
In a follow-up to the statement, FijiLive has sought a response from Chaudhry regarding the allegations made by Chand.
