Champion of Community: Brian Pulefolau’s Remarkable Journey of Service

Brian Pulefolau, renowned for his steadfast dedication to the Pasifika community in South Auckland, has been recognized for his voluntary efforts with multiple honors over the years. The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has officially acknowledged his service as the Supervisor of Security Guard Forces at Papakura Military Camp by presenting him with a Commendation for Exceptional Leadership.

Brigadier Rob Krushka highlighted that Mr. Pulefolau exemplifies the qualities the Defence Force seeks in its members, stating, “He is a symbol of professionalism and unwavering devotion to duty, representing the ideals and highest customs of the New Zealand Defence Force. He is a great ambassador and a proud member of the Security Guard Force leadership.”

Originally from Niuea, Mr. Pulefolau joined the NZDF in 2013 and has held various roles within Defence Security. He has led the security efforts at the south Auckland camp since 2018, overseeing tasks such as guest management, emergency protocols, and team training.

In addition to his security responsibilities, Mr. Pulefolau has initiated several healthy lifestyle programs at the camp, focusing on financial wellness, physical exercise, and nutrition. These programs have significantly enhanced the health and welfare of his staff and their families, with many achieving significant milestones like purchasing their first homes.

“I genuinely care about my team and aim to make a positive impact beyond my typical duties,” Mr. Pulefolau expressed. He also teaches various life skills, including fishing, using recycled equipment from departing soldiers. His efforts have resulted in successful catches of snapper and kahawai.

Mr. Pulefolau is deeply involved not only in camp leadership but also within the broader Pasifika community locally and internationally. Raised in Manurewa, he freely contributes his time and resources outside of his NZDF responsibilities, a commitment recognized by Brigadier Krushka.

Brigadier Krushka noted that Mr. Pulefolau is an active participant in local community activities, church groups, and sports teams, while also being a devoted father. He has spearheaded initiatives to send recycled goods to Pacific nations, including repurposing civilian clothes from soldiers and sending building materials to aid recovery efforts in Tonga.

Moreover, Mr. Pulefolau co-founded the Pasifika Autism Assist Group with his wife, Betty, to raise awareness of neurodiversity and create a supportive environment for parents and caregivers of children on the autistic spectrum. His community contributions earned him the Volunteer of the Year Award from Autism New Zealand in 2016.
