Champion for Freedom and Democracy: Dr. Baba’s Legacy

Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has hailed the late Dr. Tupeni Lebaivalu Baba as a champion for freedom and democracy.

“Every now and then, an individual emerges to become a guiding light for society. The late Dr. Baba was one of those,” Mr. Seruiratu stated in his tribute to the late former politician and academic.

Mr. Seruiratu also emphasized the lasting impact Dr. Baba had on his students over the years.

“As an academic, he fostered meaningful connections through academia, inspiring many young Fijians to grow and leave lasting impressions on society. He left a significant part of himself in those he taught, both in Fiji and across the Pacific, who have since assumed leadership roles in their communities.”

Mr. Seruiratu mentioned that Dr. Baba’s political ideology was rooted in pluralism and inclusivity.

“This was evident in his political engagements, being a founding member of the Fiji Labour Party and serving as a cabinet minister in the government of Dr. Timoci Bavadra, and later as one of the two Deputy Prime Ministers in the government of Mahendra Chaudhry before 2000.”

“Fiji has lost a noble son and a great man, but we find comfort in knowing that his contributions will never be forgotten. He was indeed a distinguished scholar, intellectual, and political figure, whose presence was critical for the governance in Fiji,” Mr. Seruiratu added.
