Challenges and Triumphs: Prime Minister Reflects

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka yesterday highlighted the necessity for the Coalition Government to enhance their communication, especially with the public. In his budget response, Mr. Rabuka reflected on the formidable obstacles foreseen during the elections, which have indeed come to pass, but reiterated their commitment to the task.

“We have had our setbacks and made errors, that happens with all governments,” he noted. Despite these challenges, Mr. Rabuka expressed confidence in the vision for a new Fiji, an aspiration he believes is achievable.

“Suffice it to say, Fiji has been wounded, but those wounds can be healed. We can do this together, starting here in this House,” he asserted.

Mr. Rabuka underscored a unifying truth for Fiji, emphasizing that despite differences in language, customs, and traditions, all citizens belong to the nation. He addressed recent critiques claiming the Government was “falling down on the job” amidst democratic debates and controversies, noting that such accusations are common in democracies.

“I remind the House again that during the elections in 2022, I anticipated an incoming government would face enormous difficulties and challenges, loaded with frustrations; and it would take time to get things right,” he said, adding that overcoming these challenges within the first 18 months was unrealistic.

Nevertheless, Mr. Rabuka expressed optimism about the progress being made, acknowledging the need for better communication to the people. He extended gratitude to the Leader of the Opposition for accepting this ongoing challenge.
