The National Disaster Management Office has set up three evacuation centers in the Central Division to assist residents affected by flooding in Vatuwaqa and Wailoku, Suva. According to an official statement, families in need of shelter are currently located in St Marcellin Primary School, Marist Champagnat Institute, and Marata Hall in Wailoku.
Residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas are being advised to take precautions as heavy rainfall overnight has resulted in rising river levels and flooding. The National Emergency Operation Centre has also been partially activated, and the NDMO is collaborating with various authorities to monitor the situation.
The intense rainfall has caused flooding in several towns and communities, impacting minor roads and bridges. The NDMO has reported that some regions are facing landslides and traffic disruptions, urging the public to avoid unnecessary travel in these impacted areas.
“Public safety is of utmost importance during this time. Those needing help to relocate to higher ground can reach out to the Fiji Police Force and the National Fire Authority,” the NDMO added.
Additionally, the NDMO cautions people to steer clear of flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and walkways where water levels exceed knee height. This plea aims to ensure the safety of both the public and first responders, as floodwaters can be hazardous.
The office warned that floodwaters may contain harmful contaminants, urging the public to avoid contact with them and to be aware of the risks of leptospirosis, typhoid, Dengue Fever, and diarrhea following heavy rains.
