Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, highlighting values such as peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical behavior. His remarks were made as he extended good wishes to Fiji’s Muslim community during the celebration of the Prophet’s birthday.
Professor Prasad underscored the importance of social, ethical, moral, and religious principles as foundational to the country’s social, economic, and political progress. He acknowledged the valuable contributions of various religious groups, particularly the Muslim community, in enhancing education and community life.
He stated, “This is the basis for lasting peace, harmony, and tolerance, which are essential for inclusivity, equality, dignity, and justice.” Reflecting on historical milestones, he noted that in 1974, a significant move was made by the then National Federation Party and Opposition Leader, Hon Siddiq Moidin Koya, to negotiate with Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, leading to the recognition of Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali as public holidays. He referred to this as a bipartisan effort for the national interest.
In closing, Professor Prasad wished the Muslim community a joyous celebration of their Prophet’s birthday in Fiji’s diverse cultural landscape.
