Celebrating Unity: A Call to Embrace Prophet Muhammad’s Teachings in Fiji

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasizes the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, highlighting his messages of peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical behavior. As Fiji’s Muslim community celebrates the birthday of the founder of Islam, Prof Prasad expresses his well-wishes and underscores the importance of reflecting on these teachings.

He notes that the principles of social, ethical, moral, and religious conduct are vital for the nation’s social, economic, and political progress. “As national leaders, we must recognize the significant contributions made by all religious groups in our country, particularly in education, spiritual growth, and community development,” he stated.

Prof Prasad acknowledged the Muslim community as an essential stakeholder in the nation’s development and stressed that fostering peace, harmony, and tolerance is crucial. He also pointed out that inclusivity, equality, dignity, and justice are foundational to national unity.

He recalled the historical significance of the 1974 negotiation led by the then National Federation Party and Opposition Leader Hon Siddiq Moidin Koya, with Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, which resulted in the recognition of Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali as public holidays, exemplifying bipartisanship for the nation’s interest.

In closing, he extended warm wishes for the celebration of Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday, recognizing its importance in Fiji’s multicultural and multi-religious society.
