Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, highlighting his messages of peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical behavior. As Fiji’s Muslim community celebrates the birthday of the Islamic prophet, Prof Prasad encouraged reflection on these teachings.
He underscored that the principles of social, ethical, moral, and religious conduct are essential for the advancement of society in various domains, including social, economic, and political spheres. Prof Prasad acknowledged the vital contributions made by all religious communities in Fiji, particularly in the fields of education, spirituality, and community welfare.
“The Muslim community has always played and will continue to play an integral role in our national progress,” he stated, noting that fostering peace, harmony, and tolerance is crucial for achieving inclusivity, equality, dignity, and justice.
Reflecting on history, he mentioned the negotiations in 1974 by the National Federation Party and Opposition Leader Hon Siddiq Moidin Koya with then Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, which led to the recognition of Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali as public holidays. This decision was described as a demonstration of bipartisanship for the national interest.
Prof Prasad extended his best wishes to the Muslim community for a blessed celebration of their Prophet’s Birthday, affirming the importance of unity in Fiji’s diverse, multicultural, multi-ethnic, and multi-religious society.
