In 1961, over 1,500 individuals from various regions of Fiji gathered in Daku, a village located inland from the mouth of the Wanibokasi River, to witness the opening of a new school in the morning and attend a wedding later in the day.
According to the Fiji Times from September 15, 1961, the school was constructed without any government funding and completed in just 12 days, using a combination of timber and concrete, with local carpenters handling the entire building process.
The wedding ceremony celebrated was between Ratu Ponipate Baleinanene (Roko Takala), the son of the late Ratu Lote Daulakeba, the paramount chief of Daku, and Adi Rewa Saurara, the daughter of Meleti Saurara and a niece of Emosi Saurara. Rev. Maika Tora officiated the wedding, which took place in the village hall.
