Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, highlighting his messages of peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical behavior. As Fiji’s Muslim community prepares to celebrate the Birthday of the founder of Islam, Prof Prasad conveyed his wishes for a blessed celebration and reflected on the core principles of social, ethical, moral, and religious conduct, which he believes are essential for the nation’s social, economic, and political progress.
He acknowledged the significant contributions made by all religious groups in Fiji, particularly in areas such as education and community welfare. Prof Prasad stated that the Muslim community has historically played a vital role in the country’s development and will continue to be an essential partner in achieving national goals.
He underscored that fostering lasting peace, harmony, and tolerance is crucial for ensuring inclusivity, equality, dignity, and justice within society. Prof Prasad also recalled a pivotal moment in 1974 when the National Federation Party, led by Hon Siddiq Moidin Koya, collaborated with then-Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara to formally recognize Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali as public holidays in honor of the Indo-Fijian community, exemplifying bipartisanship for the national good.
In closing, he reiterated his wishes for the Muslim community to enjoy a blessed celebration of their Prophet’s Birthday in Fiji’s diverse and harmonious society.
