The 1991 Suva Air New Zealand Hibiscus Carnival marked its sixth day by honoring senior citizens. On August 22, 1991, a special morning tea was attended by approximately 200 seniors and their families, hosted by Lord Mayor Paul Sloan at the Grand Pacific Hotel.
During his speech, Mr. Sloan highlighted the carnival’s significance in recognizing both the vibrant spirit of the younger generation and the essential contributions of older individuals. He reflected on the impressive service years represented by the participants, stating, “This morning when I stood and watched the marvelous march past, I realized how many years of service to Fiji marchers represented.” He expressed admiration for the collective “over a thousand years of service” that the attendees have provided to the nation.
The event included a procession led by the Fiji Police Band, alongside various marching teams. A memorable moment occurred when a group of 20 servicemen performed “Butuka Tu Lei na Rara ni Valu,” a song written in 1916 by Ratu Isireli Tawakidina and Ratu Jone Lewenilovo for the Labour Contingent during World War I.
Organized by the Returned Servicemen’s Association and the Fiji Council of Social Services, the morning tea, initially scheduled to end at noon, continued until 1 PM as guests enjoyed the music and dancing. The event underscored the carnival’s dedication to honoring and celebrating the contributions of all generations to the nation.
