The 1991 Suva Air New Zealand Hibiscus Carnival marked its sixth day with a special tribute to senior citizens. On August 22, 1991, approximately 200 seniors and their families gathered for a morning tea hosted by Lord Mayor Paul Sloan at the Grand Pacific Hotel.

During his speech, Mr. Sloan emphasized the importance of recognizing both the youthful spirit of the carnival and the significant contributions made by older generations. He noted the representation of many years of service to Fiji among the marchers. “This morning, as I observed the wonderful march past, I was struck by the years of service represented here,” Mr. Sloan stated. He acknowledged the attendees for their collective “over a thousand years of service” to the nation.

The event featured a procession led by the Fiji Police Band and included various marching teams. A highlight was a performance by 20 servicemen who sang “Butuka Tu Lei na Rara ni Valu,” a song composed in 1916 by Ratu Isireli Tawakidina and Ratu Jone Lewenilovo for the Labour Contingent during World War I.

Organized by the Returned Servicemen’s Association and the Fiji Council of Social Services, the morning tea was initially scheduled to end at noon but extended until 1 PM, as guests enjoyed music and dancing. The event demonstrated the carnival’s dedication to honoring all generations and celebrating their contributions to the nation.
