Celebrating a Legacy: Frank Hilton Day Shines a Light on Inclusion

The Frank Hilton Organisation is set to celebrate the birthday of its founder tomorrow. Frank Hilton Day is observed every September 26 to honor the legacy of a man dedicated to creating opportunities for all children, particularly those with disabilities.

The organisation was established in 1961 when a group of concerned citizens formed the Suva branch of The Fiji Crippled Children’s Society. This initiative arose from the need to support survivors of the poliomyelitis epidemic of 1958, as well as those affected by meningitis and birth injuries.

This effort marked the beginning of special education and supportive services for children with disabilities in Fiji. In 1967, Frank Hilton was appointed as head teacher of what was then known as the Suva Crippled Children’s School, currently recognized as Hilton Special School.

Under his guidance and growing awareness of the demand for specialized services, the school expanded its offerings and promoted an inclusive atmosphere for children with diverse abilities. From initiating special education classes for children with hearing and visual challenges to building specially designed classrooms, Frank Hilton’s legacy centers on providing opportunities and fostering development for all children.
