Marist Brother Fergus Garrett is on the verge of a significant milestone as he celebrates his 90th birthday on Sunday, August 11, 2024. He is believed to be one of the oldest school teachers in Fiji, actively sharing his wisdom with students at Corpus Christi College in Suva.
Originally from New Zealand, Brother Fergus became a Fijian citizen after arriving in Fiji in 1970 as a Marist Brother. Over the years, he has taught in various schools across the nation.
A birthday celebration was held for him at the Marist Brothers home located within St Marcellin Primary School, where members of the Marist family gathered. Reflecting on his journey, he recalled, “I came to Fiji in 1970 and was at Albert Park to celebrate the independence of Fiji.”
At that time, the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara served as chief minister. Brother Fergus began teaching at Marist Brothers High School where he educated numerous students who later became national leaders, including former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, among others.
An interview with Brother Fergus, along with highlights from his birthday celebration, will be featured on the Fiji Times Facebook Page this Thursday.
