Marist Brother Fergus Garrett is set to mark his 90th birthday on Sunday, August 11, 2024, making him potentially the oldest active school teacher in Fiji. Currently teaching at Corpus Christi College in Suva, the New Zealand native became a Fijian citizen after relocating to Fiji in 1970 as a Marist Brother.

To honor his significant milestone, the Marist community came together at the Marist Brothers home alongside St Marcellin Primary School on Sunday. Reflecting on his journey, Brother Fergus recalled his arrival in Fiji, where he was present at Albert Park during the country’s celebration of independence. He shared, “The late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara was the chief minister, and I was sent to Fiji to teach at Marist Brothers High School, where I spent several years.”

Throughout his teaching career, Brother Fergus has influenced many students who have gone on to become prominent national leaders, including former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

An interview with Brother Fergus and highlights from his birthday celebration will be shared on the Fiji Times Facebook Page this Thursday.
