Marist Brother Fergus Garrett is poised to become the oldest school teacher in Fiji, celebrating his 90th birthday on Sunday, August 11, 2024. He continues to share his wealth of knowledge with students at Corpus Christi College in Suva.
Originally from New Zealand, Fergus became a Fijian citizen after arriving in the country in 1970 as a Marist Brother. Over the years, he has taught across various schools throughout Fiji.
To commemorate this milestone, the Marist community gathered at the Marist Brothers home in St Marcellin Primary School on Sunday for a celebratory event.
Reflecting on his time in Fiji, he stated, “I came to Fiji in 1970 and was at Albert Park to celebrate the independence of Fiji.” He recalled the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara serving as chief minister at that time and his assignment to teach at Marist Brothers High School, where he taught for several years.
Fergus has played a significant role in shaping the futures of many students, including notable figures such as former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, among others.
An interview with Brother Fergus and highlights of his birthday celebration will be available on the Fiji Times Facebook Page this Thursday.
