The Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) is encouraging the community to seize the opportunity for attractive discounts during the Diwali festival, while also urging individuals to consider those who are underprivileged and in need. NCCI President Dr. Ram Raju emphasized that Diwali represents one of Fiji’s most significant interfaith celebrations, reflecting the diversity of the nation’s multicultural, multi-religious, and multi-ethnic society.
Dr. Raju highlighted the economic benefits of Diwali, noting that businesses typically flourish during this time, with opportunities for consumers to find bargains on a variety of household items. He shared that Diwali is celebrated not just as a festivity but as a vibrant expression of Fiji’s unique identity, with the festival traditionally spanning five days and culminating in an exuberant celebration filled with sweets, snacks, and vegetarian dishes shared among families, friends, neighbors, and even strangers.
The festival fosters a spirit of peace, harmony, hope, goodwill, tolerance, and forgiveness among the community. Dr. Raju acknowledged the historical importance of Diwali in Fiji, linking it to the Indenture System that brought over 60,000 Indian laborers to the country from 1879 to 1916. He noted that the year 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of Diwali being recognized as a public holiday in Fiji, a significant acknowledgment initiated by the late Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara in 1974.
He also noted the recent declaration by the Coalition Government led by Sitiveni Rabuka to designate Girmit as a public holiday, further commemorating the contributions of the Indian community to Fijian society.
Overall, the message emphasizes the dual importance of celebrating Diwali while uplifting those less fortunate, creating a sense of community and shared joy.
This Diwali season not only enhances economic opportunities but also reinforces the cultural fabric of Fiji, showcasing its commitment to inclusivity and remembrance of its diverse heritage.
