Technical issues with closed circuit television (CCTV) systems can hinder police investigations and evidence collection, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka. He noted that the Northern Command Centre is connected to CCTVs at various locations throughout Labasa Town to monitor potential criminal activity.
SSP Baledrokadroka emphasized the importance of public understanding, stating that while the police strive to gather information, technical failures can delay investigations. In relation to a recent assault case involving a taxi driver on September 3, he confirmed that CCTV footage was instrumental in apprehending the suspect the following Wednesday.
The assaulted taxi driver, Aiyaz Din Mohammed, 31, sustained facial injuries during the incident. SSP Baledrokadroka urged local businesses to install CCTV cameras to improve surveillance and enhance security, while also aiding the police in gathering information.
He appealed for increased public-police collaboration in reporting crime suspects. Labasa Taxi Association chairman Mahen Prasad echoed the need for police vigilance, particularly among traffic officers, to prevent future assaults.
Mr. Prasad pointed out that while police conduct surveillance, taxi association drivers will help share information about unauthorized taxi operators. These illegal taxi operators typically operate their private vehicles as taxis without the necessary permits. He reiterated that such practices are unlawful and should come to an end.
