CCTV Malfunctions: A Hidden Challenge in Crime Fighting

The effectiveness of police investigations can be hindered by technical issues with closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka. He revealed that the Northern Command Centre is connected to various CCTV cameras located in Labasa Town, which aid in monitoring potential criminal activities.

SSP Baledrokadroka emphasized the necessity for the public to recognize that while police strive to gather relevant information, technical malfunctions can delay investigative processes. Regarding a recent incident in Labasa Town on September 3, where a taxi driver was assaulted, he noted that CCTV footage played a crucial role in identifying and arresting the suspect the following Wednesday.

The taxi driver, Aiyaz Din Mohammed, 31, suffered facial injuries during the alleged assault. SSP Baledrokadroka encouraged local businesses to install CCTV cameras to enhance security for their establishments and to assist the police in gathering information.

He called for increased collaboration between the public and police in sharing information about crime suspects. In support of this, Labasa Taxi Association chairman Mahen Prasad urged that police maintain their vigilance, particularly among traffic officers, to prevent such assaults from happening in the future.

Mr. Prasad added that while police continue their surveillance efforts, taxi drivers within the association will contribute by sharing information concerning illegal taxi operations. He pointed out the prevalence of unlicensed taxi operators in Labasa who illegally operate their private vehicles as taxis, reiterating that such practices should be prohibited.
