CCTV Connections: A Double-Edged Sword in Crime Fighting?

The malfunctioning of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras can occasionally hinder police investigations, according to Divisional Police Commander, Senior Superintendent Kemueli Baledrokadroka. He noted that the Northern Command Centre is connected to CCTV cameras in various locations around Labasa Town to help monitor potential criminal activities.

SSP Baledrokadroka emphasized the importance of public awareness regarding the police’s diligent efforts to gather evidence, while also acknowledging that technical issues can sometimes extend the investigation period. In reference to the recent assault on a taxi driver in Labasa Town on September 3, he mentioned that CCTV footage played a crucial role in the arrest of the suspect last Wednesday.

The victim, 31-year-old taxi driver Aiyaz Din Mohammed, sustained facial injuries during the alleged attack. SSP Baledrokadroka called for local businesses to install CCTV cameras to improve surveillance for their own security and assist law enforcement.

He urged stronger collaboration between the public and police, particularly in sharing information about crime suspects. Mahen Prasad, chairman of the Labasa Taxi Association, echoed this sentiment, stressing the need for police vigilance, especially among traffic officers, to prevent such incidents from happening again.

Prasad highlighted that while the police continue their monitoring efforts, taxi drivers would also contribute by sharing information regarding illegal taxi operators. He noted that many individuals in Labasa operate private vehicles as pirate taxis without the necessary permits. He concluded by stating that illegal operations must cease.
