CCTV Challenges: A Double-Edged Sword for Police Investigations

Technical malfunctions of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras can hinder police investigations, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka. He noted that the Northern Command Centre is connected to several CCTV cameras in Labasa Town, which aids in monitoring potential criminal activities.

SSP Baledrokadroka emphasized the importance of public understanding regarding the police’s efforts to gather information during investigations, while acknowledging that technical issues sometimes delay the process. In response to a recent incident involving an assault on a taxi driver in Labasa Town on September 3, he mentioned that CCTV footage played a crucial role in apprehending the suspect the following Wednesday.

The victim, 31-year-old taxi driver Aiyaz Din Mohammed, sustained facial injuries during the alleged attack. SSP Baledrokadroka urged local businesses to install CCTV cameras to enhance security and assist the police in gathering information.

He called for increased collaboration between the public and police in sharing information about crime suspects. Labasa Taxi Association chairman Mahen Prasad supported this call, highlighting that police must maintain vigilance, particularly with traffic officers, to prevent future assaults.

Prasad indicated that taxi association drivers are willing to assist the police by sharing information about illegal taxi operators, who do not have permits and operate their personal vehicles as taxis. He stressed that such illegal operations must cease for the safety and legality of local transport services.
