A police officer from Vunika, Labasa is currently under investigation following an incident where he was allegedly seen purchasing drugs at the Labasa Market. The occurrence, captured by a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera, took place last Thursday. An ex-police officer witnessed the uniformed officer leaving the market with the suspected illicit substances.
Paul Jaduram, the special administrator chair of the Labasa Town Council, confirmed that after receiving a complaint regarding the incident, the market master reviewed the CCTV footage. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the market master promptly reported it to the Labasa Police Station, given that the officer was in uniform.
Mr. Jaduram emphasized that the community is aware of certain police officers’ involvement in drug activities and encouraged the public to report any suspicious behavior to trusted individuals. He stated that residents often alert authorities when they spot drug dealers in the market, reinforcing the need for collaborative action between the public and law enforcement.
He also urged parents to be vigilant as there are reports of some youths participating in drug-related activities. The municipal market is a bustling hub in town, close to various transport stations and shops, presenting a challenge in the fight against drug trade. Jaduram called for a united effort to combat the ongoing drug issue in the community.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander (DPC) North, confirmed that investigations into the allegations are ongoing.
This situation sheds light on the critical challenge of corruption within law enforcement agencies and the pressing need for active community involvement to address drug-related issues effectively. While the actions of an individual officer may undermine public trust, it also creates an opportunity for transparency, accountability, and collaboration to restore faith in the system as citizens and police work together towards a drug-free environment.
