Villagers in Nabuna, located in the Cawa district on Koro Island, are expressing cautious optimism regarding the upcoming establishment of a five-star hotel on their land. They recognize the potential benefits of the development, such as job creation and economic growth, but are also mindful of the potential negative effects on the local marine ecosystem.
Sekaia Bolabola, the district representative of Cawa, stated that the hotel project is expected to enhance economic activity and provide employment opportunities for the youth in the area. “We are looking forward to the five-star hotel that will be established here in Nabuna,” Mr. Bolabola remarked, adding that the project will be owned and developed by international investors.
Despite the positive outlook, Mr. Bolabola emphasized the importance of safeguarding the marine environment amid the development. “A lot of development is coming through, however, we hope our marine ecosystem is maintained in the process,” he mentioned. He noted that this concern is something that will require further discussion.
Mr. Bolabola expressed optimism about the employment prospects the development would bring. “Of course, we support this new development. It’ll encourage our youths to work here, find employment and keep their minds off getting involved in negative social issues,” he stated.
He also indicated that construction for the hotel project is set to begin soon, likely within the next few weeks. In addition, a feasibility study has been conducted for a proposed jetty in Nabuna, which aims to provide better access for both local business operators and villagers.
