The Fiji Police Force has issued a cautionary statement in light of a social media post alleging that certain individuals are injecting chemicals into fresh coconuts, or “bu,” to induce sleep in homeowners, thereby facilitating theft. This alarming claim has caused significant concern among the public, especially following the circulation of an image depicting individuals lying on the ground next to police personnel.
In response to the rising unease, Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations Livai Driu encouraged the community to refrain from sharing unverified information that can lead to unnecessary fear. He urged individuals who encounter such claims to report them through official channels rather than spreading them online.
“We encourage the sharing of information through public platforms where it can be verified and kept confidential,” Driu stated, emphasizing the importance of confirmation before drawing conclusions about the situation.
The police are currently focused on evaluating these claims and have asked the public to help by reporting any suspicious activities or information directly through their established channels, including Crime Stoppers and the Serious Organised Crime & Intelligence Department.
The Fiji Police assured citizens that if any credible patterns of criminal behavior arise, they will communicate them promptly and transparently. In the meantime, they advise everyone to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious occurrences directly to the authorities.
This situation serves as a reminder of the need for responsible sharing of information, particularly on social media, as unverified claims can cause unnecessary panic within communities. By promoting direct communication and verification, the Fiji Police are working to keep the public informed and safe.
In summary, the police are actively addressing unfounded allegations to maintain tranquility and encourage community vigilance against real threats. With open lines of communication, citizens can help enhance safety and prevent the spread of misinformation.
