The Fiji Police Force has issued a warning advising the public to exercise caution regarding a viral social media post that claims certain youths are injecting chemicals into fresh coconuts—known locally as “bu”—to sedate homeowners and facilitate robberies.

The alarming post features an image of several individuals lying on the ground, accompanied by police officers, which has raised considerable concern within the community. In response, Assistant Commissioner of Police for Operations, Livai Driu, urged the public not to propagate unverified information that can lead to unnecessary fear and panic.

Driu emphasized the importance of verifying such claims before making them public and encouraged individuals to report any suspicious messages to the authorities. “We encourage the sharing of information via public platforms that are confidential so issues can be verified,” he stated.

While the circulating social media message presents a disturbing narrative about potential criminal activities, Driu reiterated that the police must check these assertions before taking action. He noted, “The Fiji Police would share information if there were a trend as such, and we urge caution in disseminating unverified information that could lead to panic.”

To promote community safety, the police have provided official channels for reporting any suspicious activities, including Crime Stoppers and the Serious Organised Crime & Intelligence Department.

The Fiji Police also highlighted the need for individuals to verify any information shared on social media platforms, stressing that only authentic details should be communicated to maintain calm within the community.

The police have committed to keeping the public informed in a timely manner should any confirmed patterns of this alleged criminal behavior arise.

In this climate of misinformation, it’s crucial for communities to come together and rely on credible sources of information while remaining vigilant and proactive in reporting any real dangers. By doing so, residents can help foster a safer environment.

In summary, the police are urging responsible sharing of information and remain dedicated to combating the potential threats to neighborhood safety, further reinforcing community trust in law enforcement.
