The Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, has called on the public to exercise caution when sharing information on social media platforms. His warning follows a misleading post that circulated online, suggesting that police had detained boys for allegedly selling green coconut juice that was supposedly adulterated with drugs.
Despite the social media claims, the police have confirmed that no such apprehensions were reported to them. The controversial post included a screenshot depicting a police officer detaining boys in Namadi Heights, Suva. However, local residents present during the event clarified that the boys were actually caught stealing coconuts and breadfruits from nearby properties.
ACP Driu emphasized the importance of verifying information before sharing it, stating, “Police will share information if there was a trend as such, and we urge caution in disseminating unverified information that would create panic.”
In an age where information spreads rapidly online, it’s vital for people to be responsible consumers of news, as unfounded claims can lead to unnecessary fear and disruption in the community. Sharing accurate information not only fosters a trustworthy environment but also helps in maintaining social harmony.
This incident serves as a reminder of the critical role each individual plays in ensuring that accurate information prevails, especially in matters concerning safety and public order.
