The Fiji Police Force has issued a warning in response to a concerning social media post suggesting that certain youths might be injecting chemicals into fresh coconuts, or “bu,” to lull homeowners into a state of sleep for theft purposes. The post includes an alarming image depicting several individuals lying on the ground with police officials present, which has raised public anxiety.

Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations, Livai Driu, addressed the rising fears by urging citizens to refrain from disseminating unverified information that could incite undue panic. He specifically requested that individuals who share such claims do so through official channels where the information can be validated.

Driu explained, “We encourage the sharing of information via public platforms where it can be kept confidential so it can be properly verified.” He noted that the police are committed to confirming any trends before taking action.

In his statement, Driu reassured the community that if any credible evidence of such offenses comes to light, it will be communicated quickly and transparently. In the meantime, he encouraged the public to remain observant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities through official channels, including Crime Stoppers and the Serious Organised Crime & Intelligence Department.

The Fiji Police Force reminds the populace to be judicious when sharing information on social media, advocating that only verified details should be circulated to avoid unnecessary fear. Their promise of vigilant monitoring of reported incidents serves as a beacon of hope for the community, reassuring them that safety remains a priority.

Overall, this situation underscores the importance of responsible communication in the digital age, emphasizing that verifying information before sharing can help maintain community safety and reduce panic.
