An NGO has raised concerns that measures aimed at reducing the sharing of explicit images on certain applications could inadvertently lead to unintended censorship. Shamima Ali, the coordinator for the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, emphasized the importance of approaching this issue with care, advocating for proper consultations before any platforms are removed.
Ali expressed that while some platforms may need to be restricted, it is essential to evaluate each case individually. She highlighted that sexting and issues related to it are not new, with numerous complaints received over the years. However, she noted a lack of understanding regarding how these specific apps function and how to address the problem of explicit images being shared without consent.
Furthermore, Ali pointed out that the sharing of such images often involves manipulative tactics, citing cases where individuals impersonate others to commit harassment. She recalled incidents where women have experienced stalking and threats after rejecting advances, which have been common complaints received by the NGO.
In her statement, she advised authorities to seek further expert guidance before taking drastic actions, suggesting that a balanced approach could lead to more effective solutions to protect individuals while avoiding unnecessary restrictions.
