A police officer from Vunika, Labasa is under investigation after being allegedly captured on CCTV purchasing drugs at Labasa Market. The incident reportedly occurred last Thursday when an ex-police officer observed the officer, in uniform, leaving the market after the alleged transaction.
Paul Jaduram, the special administrator chair for Labasa Town Council, confirmed that upon receiving a complaint, the market master reviewed the CCTV footage and subsequently reported the matter to the Labasa Police Station, highlighting the seriousness of the issue given the officer’s uniformed status.
Jaduram noted that the community has expressed concerns regarding certain police officers’ involvement in drug activities. He encouraged the public to share information with trustworthy individuals to combat this issue effectively. He also advised parents to remain vigilant as he noted that some children may be involved in drug purchases and sales.
The Labasa municipal market, located near busy transportation hubs, sees a lot of activity, making it a critical area to monitor for illicit drug activity. Jaduram emphasized the need for community cooperation in the ongoing fight against drugs.
Divisional Police Commander North, Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroka, assured that the investigation is active and ongoing.
This situation highlights the importance of community vigilance in addressing drug-related issues. The collaboration between the public and law enforcement can foster a safer environment and help deter such illicit activities. With continued awareness and reporting, there is hope that these issues can be effectively addressed, leading to a healthier and safer community.
