A police officer from the Lautoka Police Station has been charged with misconduct related to her family’s involvement in receiving stolen property. The officer is accused of providing false information during an investigation regarding the use of two dishonored cheques to buy electronic items, which were later found at her home. Her husband and teenage son have also been implicated, facing charges of receiving stolen property in connection with this case.
During the inquiry, investigators discovered that a phone purchased with one of the dishonored checks was reportedly used by the officer, who then claimed it had gone missing. This led to an additional charge against her for abuse of office related to another incident in which she allegedly stole a phone designated as lost and found.
The charges were authorized by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, and the officer is set to appear in Lautoka Magistrates Court. Meanwhile, her family members will be presented at the Nadi Magistrates Court.
Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu reinforced the commitment to holding officers accountable for any breaches of the law. He emphasized that the integrity of the policing profession must not be compromised, stating, “If one chooses to breach the ethics and laws that govern our work, then they should stand ready to face the consequences.”
This incident reflects ongoing issues within law enforcement regarding accountability and ethical conduct. While the allegations are serious, they also highlight a proactive approach by the police leadership to address misconduct and reaffirm public trust in their enforcement agencies. The emphasis on integrity and accountability serves as a hopeful sign for improved community relations and trust in law enforcement efforts.
