The Fiji Police M-PAiSA task force has taken action against two individuals accused of perpetrating a financial deception scheme through the popular mobile money transfer application. The suspects, a 29-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, both residing in Davuilevu and Koronivia respectively, are alleged to have worked together to defraud victims via a rental car scam.
On September 17, the duo reportedly utilized various Facebook accounts to advertise rental cars, instructing potential clients to make payments using the M-PAiSA app. One victim, who lives in Nadi, fell for the scam after sending $190 to the mobile number provided in the advertisement. After sending the money, the victim attempted to reach out to the suspects but soon discovered he had been scammed and promptly reported the incident to the Nadi Police Station.
The two accused individuals have been charged with one count each of Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception and Dishonestly Dealing with Personal Financial Information. They are scheduled to appear before the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.
This case serves as a cautionary tale regarding the risks associated with online transactions and the importance of verifying information before making payments. As mobile transactions become increasingly common, it’s essential for users to remain vigilant and informed to protect themselves from potential fraud.
Looking ahead, law enforcement’s proactive measures demonstrate a commitment to tackling financial crimes, helping to foster a safer digital community. The situation emphasizes the importance of awareness and education regarding online safety, ensuring that individuals can navigate financial technologies with confidence.
