Two cattle farmers in Labasa are facing considerable distress after suffering from livestock thefts that have resulted in significant financial losses, estimated at nearly $10,000. Arif Hussein, a farmer from Valebasoga, reported losing three bulls over two months, with incidents occurring on November 29, December 20, and December 27. Despite promptly informing the Labasa Police Station after each theft, the situation only worsened when Hussein discovered the remains of two of his bulls near his farm weeks later. This brutal act has deeply affected his family, who rely on their livestock as their primary source of income.
“My wife and children sacrifice a lot of time looking after the livestock,” Hussein expressed, highlighting the emotional and financial strain the theft has placed on their family. He hopes that the perpetrator is found soon, as sleepless nights have become routine for them, watching over their remaining animals.
A second farmer, Mahaboob Ali, also had a bull worth $3,000 go missing in December. After weeks of searching, he found his bull’s skin discarded in the mountains. Ali, who has been farming for over two decades, echoed Hussein’s calls for justice, urging respect within the community.
The Acting Divisional Police Commander for the North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, confirmed that investigations are underway following the reports filed by both farmers.
This concerning trend of livestock thefts highlights broader issues facing farmers in the region, including a potential increase in criminal activity during times of hardship. In light of recent events, the Fiji Police Force has ramped up efforts to address livestock thefts, particularly in adverse weather conditions that might encourage opportunistic crime. Community vigilance and cooperation are crucial during this period, and the hope is for increased safety and support among farmers and the broader community.
As the farmers in Labasa continue to cope with their losses, this situation fosters a call for empathy and solidarity within the community, reminding everyone that compassion is essential, especially during difficult times.
