Two cattle farmers in Labasa are experiencing significant emotional and financial distress due to the theft and brutal killings of their livestock, resulting in combined losses nearing $10,000. Arif Hussein, a farmer from Valebasoga, reported that he lost three bulls over two months, with the first incident occurring on November 29, followed by additional thefts on December 20 and December 27. Despite promptly reporting these thefts to the Labasa Police Station, his situation took a heartbreaking turn when he discovered the remains of two bulls near his farm weeks later.

“Seeing the skin and intestines was devastating; these bulls weren’t just stock; they were integral to my family’s livelihood,” Hussein expressed, noting that he has suffered losses exceeding $6,000. He is particularly concerned about the impact on his children’s education and the financial strain placed on his family as they strive to maintain their business amidst sleepless nights spent protecting their remaining animals.

Another affected farmer, 75-year-old Mahaboob Ali from Soasoa, reported that his bull, valued at approximately $3,000, went missing on December 9. Weeks later, he found only its skin discarded in the nearby mountains. Ali, who has been farming for over two decades, emphasized the importance of community respect and ethics, stating, “No religion encourages such acts of theft and cruelty.”

The Acting Divisional Police Commander for the North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, confirmed that investigations are ongoing into both farmers’ reports, highlighting the growing concern over livestock theft in the region. Local authorities have noted that such crimes tend to rise during challenging weather conditions and economic hardship. In response, the Fiji Police Force is increasing community policing efforts, urging residents to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities.

As these farmers navigate their hardships, the broader community recognizes the need for empathy and solidarity during these trying times. With increased vigilance and collaborative efforts between law enforcement and community members, there is hope for a safer environment for farmers in Labasa. This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the bond between farmers and their livestock, emphasizing the importance of supporting one another in safeguarding livelihoods and restoring peace of mind within the agricultural community.
