Carnival Chaos: Is Public Safety at Risk?

Spread the love

With the onset of the rainy season, concerns regarding public safety have been heightened, particularly regarding the operation of amusement rides during adverse weather. Recent events at the Sigatoka Carnival raised alarms when the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) department permitted a Ferris wheel to operate during midweek rainfall. This oversight has sparked serious discussions about the potential risks involved.

Operators and the OHS department must prioritise safety, especially when it comes to large rides like vintage Ferris wheels, which can experience significant vibrations from their single-cylinder engine mounts. Even light rainfall can compromise the stability of the ground, creating the risk of tilting. Just a minor tilt can disengage the cable connected to the wheel, resulting in the dangerous possibility of the ride spinning uncontrollably, which could throw passengers from their seats.

The effectiveness of the ride’s brake system can also be jeopardised under such conditions, further endangering the lives of those enjoying the attraction.

Drawing from my background as a retired engineer, I can attest to the severe consequences of negligence in these scenarios. It is imperative that the OHS department implements stringent safety inspections, particularly of older rides, to safeguard against accidents. Allowing operators to function without adhering to strict safety standards during unsafe weather reflects a concerning attitude towards public safety.

Preserving human life should always take precedence. We must work together to ensure a safe, incident-free environment, maintaining a commitment to safety rather than prioritising convenience or profit. With collective vigilance, we can make this year a safe one for all participants at public events like the carnival.

In conclusion, while the carnival brings joy and excitement to the community, safety cannot be taken lightly. It is crucial for the authorities to act decisively to prevent any untoward incidents as the festivities continue, reinforcing our shared responsibility to protect the well-being of everyone involved.
