The board of the Sugar Cane Growers Fund is currently in discussions with various stakeholders to introduce kidney dialysis services aimed at benefiting farmers. Board Chair Ahemad Bhamji shared that they are negotiating with the Indian High Commission to establish a six-bed dialysis unit, while also collaborating with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Bhamji expressed optimism about the initiative, noting that the conversations with both ministries have been incredibly positive, and he appreciates their support. He highlighted that this initiative will enhance the fund’s corporate social responsibility efforts, although he mentioned that additional government assistance will be necessary.
Dr. Ram Raju, President of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has praised this initiative, emphasizing its importance to the canefarming community. He remarked that while the sugar industry may not hold the top position anymore, it continues to be a vital element of Fiji’s growth over the past century.
Furthermore, the Sugar Cane Growers Fund has also launched a Loyalty Program in partnership with Pacific Specialist Healthcare (psH) hospital, which aims to provide services to sugar cane farmers. This initiative signifies a commitment to improving healthcare access for those involved in agriculture, reinforcing the important role farmers play in the economy.
