Cancer Survivors Find Hope in New Fiji Retreat

The Self Care Retreat (Fiji) Hub, a supportive environment for women cancer survivors, officially opened its doors in Nabua yesterday, a significant step forward in providing critical support for cancer survivors.

Mereane Vavataga, the chief executive officer of Self Care Retreat Fiji, emphasized the vital role of the new hub. “It’s an oasis where women cancer survivors can come when sickness overwhelms them,” she stated. “They can rest here and find nourishment. It’s a safe space for discussing their experiences and the challenges they face.”

Founded in 2021, the NGO aims to support women cancer survivors in their spiritual, emotional, and mental recovery. Vavataga explained that twice a year, the organization takes groups of survivors to a hotel to foster relationships and build trust. Upon their return, the survivors participate in a three-week Bible study program focused on spiritual, emotional, and inner healing.

Senior Pastor Manasa Kolivuso of Faith Harvest Church in Nausori officiated the hub’s opening and praised the initiative. “Thank you so much for establishing this hub, a safe haven where people can connect and feel understood,” he remarked.

During the event, cancer survivor Bulamarau Tikoduadua shared her inspiring story. “A year ago today, I was completely paralyzed. My cancer journey was short but aggressive,” she reflected, underscoring the necessity of support networks like the Self Care Retreat Hub. “I’m truly thankful for this organization because after cancer treatments, the journey can feel quite lonely,” she added.

Vavataga also shared the organization’s aspiration to eventually open a hospice, describing the current hub as just the beginning. The Self Care Retreat Fiji is sustained through donations and partnerships. “Even for this building, I had to shave my hair to raise funds,” she shared, referencing her involvement in the ‘Shave it or Save it’ campaign earlier this month.
