The Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACP) Livai Driu has provided reassurances to the public regarding their safety amid concerns following the release of George Speight, Shane Stevens, and others earlier this week. These individuals were freed through a Presidential pardon on Thursday.

Mr. Driu emphasized that citizens should remain calm, stating, “Everything is normal.” He reassured the public that there is currently no threat and that the situation is manageable and controlled. The release was conducted through due process via the judicial and corrections systems, as approved by the Mercy Commission and the president.

He noted that the police are closely monitoring the situation, affirming that everything remains under control. While there have been inquiries from international media, Driu has assured them that there is no cause for alarm, indicating that the local situation is stable.

He urged the public to refrain from taking matters into their own hands, warning against opportunists who might exploit the situation to promote their agendas. Driu also cautioned those speculating on social media about potential unrest stemming from Speight’s release, stating that the police are committed to enforcing the law vigorously and will respond decisively to anyone attempting to instill fear in the community. He reiterated that no one is above the law and that any disruptions would be addressed firmly.
