Opposition Member of Parliament Viliame Naupoto has expressed concerns that the 2013 Constitution fails to unify the people of Fiji. During his statement in Parliament at the end of the week, Naupoto highlighted that this lack of unity stems from the manner in which the Constitution was formed.
He noted a significant political divide in support for the Constitution, attributing this divide to a widespread perception that the document is closely linked to a specific political party. Since the inaugural election held under this Constitution in 2014, it has faced criticism and, at times, ridicule both within and outside the Parliament. Many individuals and organizations have called for a review of the Constitution.
Naupoto emphasized the necessity for amendments to the Constitution and urged fellow MPs to recognize the critical importance of involving the public in this process. He clarified that seeking a review and amendment of the Constitution is not an anti-party initiative but rather a move that supports the people, promotes nation-building, and strengthens democracy in Fiji.
