Calls Rise for FICAC Chief to Step Down Amid Controversy

The Fiji Labour Party (FLP) is demanding the resignation of Barbara Malimali from her position as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry stated that this call is necessary until the allegations of abuse of office against her are resolved by independent and impartial authorities.

Chaudhry emphasized that allowing Malimali to lead FICAC while she is under investigation would be a grave injustice. He pointed out that she was being questioned by authorities at the time her appointment process was advanced, which he deemed inappropriate.

Additionally, he expressed concerns regarding the close relationship between Malimali and Attorney-General Graham Leung. While Leung attempts to present himself as an unbiased observer, Chaudhry claims there is significant behind-the-scenes involvement in her appointment.

Chaudhry noted that Malimali did not apply for the FICAC commissioner position when it was first advertised in June 2024 but submitted her application when the position was reposted on July 13.

Attempts to reach Malimali for comments went unanswered.
