Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has expressed his support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s plan to create an independent and impartial Commission of Inquiry. This initiative aims to examine claims made by former FICAC deputy commissioner Francis Puleiwai regarding purported ministerial interference within FICAC.

Seruiratu emphasized the seriousness of Puleiwai’s allegations, stating that they warrant immediate attention and investigation. He agreed with the Prime Minister on the necessity of this inquiry, stating, “An independent, impartial Commission of Inquiry is needed.”

He proposed that the commission be established following the current week’s parliamentary session to ensure fairness, transparency, and effective governance. Seruiratu suggested the commission include judicial officers, members of Parliament, and distinguished legal experts from the private sector, ensuring that participants are not under any active investigation and do not have conflicts of interest pertinent to the issues being investigated.

Highlighting the weight of the allegations, Seruiratu remarked that they strike at the core of good governance and democracy. He expressed hope that Francis Puleiwai will be available to clarify her allegations and that those implicated will have the opportunity to defend themselves.

“We are at a crossroads for our beloved nation,” he stated, urging representatives of the Fijian people to diligently seek the truth behind these allegations and to work towards rebuilding public trust.
