Calls for Ministers to Be Held Accountable: Is Fiji’s Leadership at Risk?

Opposition MP Ketan Lal is urging Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to promptly remove Lynda Tabuya from her position as Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection. In a statement, Lal emphasized that the people of Fiji deserve a government that upholds human rights and social justice.

“They deserve leadership that is compassionate, informed, and dedicated to justice,” Lal stated. He argued that Tabuya’s actions and statements demonstrate that she is unfit for her role.

Lal accused Tabuya of displaying a troubling disregard for human rights and justice, which are essential to democracy. He criticized her proposal for the death penalty, highlighting that it not only shows a misunderstanding of effective crime prevention but also contradicts global human rights standards.

“This is not merely a policy disagreement; it’s a serious violation of the ethical obligations of her ministerial position,” Lal added. He expressed his alarm over Tabuya’s recent advocacy for reinstating the death penalty for serious drug offenses and noted that further action is needed in response to her controversial stance.

FijiLive has reached out to Tabuya for her comments on the matter.
