Opposition Member of Parliament Ketan Lal is urging Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to promptly remove Lynda Tabuya from her position as Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection.
In a recent statement, Lal emphasized that the citizens of Fiji deserve a government that promotes human rights and social justice. He expressed the need for leadership that is compassionate, well-informed, and dedicated to justice, arguing that Tabuya’s actions and statements indicate she is unfit for her role.
Lal criticized Tabuya for demonstrating a concerning lack of respect for human rights and justice, which he believes are essential to the country’s democracy. He specifically condemned her advocacy for the death penalty, asserting that it not only reflects a serious misunderstanding of effective crime prevention strategies but also conflicts with international human rights standards. He described this issue as a significant breach of the responsibilities and ethical obligations that come with her ministerial role.
“I must reiterate my deep concern regarding the recent and alarming stance taken by the Minister, advocating for the reintroduction of the death penalty for those that deal drugs in huge quantities. While I have previously condemned this reckless and regressive proposal, it is now clear that further action is necessary,” Lal stated.
FijiLive has sought comments from the Minister for Women and Children regarding these allegations.
