Opposition MP Ketan Lal is urging Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to swiftly remove Lynda Tabuya from her role as Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection. Lal made his assertion in a statement, emphasizing that the people of Fiji deserve a government that upholds human rights and social justice.
He called for urgent action, insisting that Fiji requires leadership that is compassionate, knowledgeable, and dedicated to justice, asserting that Tabuya’s actions and statements have rendered her unfit for her position. Lal criticized Tabuya for showing a troubling disregard for human rights and justice, which he considers essential to democracy.
He pointed out that her support for the death penalty signifies a serious misinterpretation of effective crime prevention strategies and contradicts international human rights standards. Lal described this issue not merely as a difference in policy but as a significant violation of the ethical responsibilities associated with her ministerial role.
He expressed deep concern over Tabuya’s recent proposal to reinstate the death penalty for those involved in large-scale drug trafficking, reiterating his opposition to this regressive suggestion and stressing the need for further action. FijiLive has sought comments from the Minister for Women and Children.
